This nineteenth-century classic by Victor Hugo has been adapted by Tim Kelly to take an honest look at the themes Hugo emphasizes. Many of us know the tale: around the French Revolution, convict Jean Valjean is released from Toulon prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean soon becomes a changed man after facing his demons, through an act of profound grace. Told not as a musical, stripped to the bones, the play includes scenes not found in any other dramatization of the novel. Themes continue to surface surrounding the power of redemption, mercy, forgiveness, and the never-ending battle between pride and grace, as “the unfortunate and the infamous are associated and confounded in a single word: Les Misérables.”
